The Upper Owens is a modest looking meadow stream that holds some of the largest trout in the Eastern Sierra, and it fishes two completely different ways depending on the season. This selection covers both: the willing small browns of summer, and the lake fish that run up from Crowley when the water cools.

• BH Pheasant Tail, Sparkle Back. The flashier version for off colour water.

• BL Bright Red Weighted Squirmy Wormy. Lake fish are not subtle in autumn.

• TG BH Zebra Midge, Black. The dropper that works all year.

• Adams Parachute. Covers most of what comes off.

• Elk Hair Caddis, Brown. The most reliable hatch on this river.

• Trico Male Poly Spinner. For the spinner fall around 9.

• Gemma Trico Dun. For the hatch before it.

• BH Olive Hares Ear. Buggy and unspecific, which is often what you want.

• Wooly Bugger, Brown. Swung through the deep bends for the big ones.

• Copper John, Black. Weight and flash in one fly.

• Foam Beetle. Meadow stream, grassy banks, obvious really.

Fish upstream and fish early in warm weather. The confluence stays cooler than the bridge.
