EAST WALKER RIVER
Fly Fishing the East Walker River: Flies & Tactics
The East Walker River - and especially the legendary ‘miracle mile’ below Bridgeport Reservoir - is big-brown country. Steady tailwater flows, rich bug life and deep, structured runs make it one of the most rewarding rivers on the 395 corridor.
Nymphing is king here. Indicator nymphing and Euro nymphing both produce, fished deep through the runs and pockets where heavy browns and rainbows hold. Streamers come into their own when the water is up or off-color, or when you’re specifically hunting the bigger fish in the deeper water below the dam.
The East Walker fishes well much of the year, with flows around the 100–150 CFS range creating ideal conditions. Get your flies down - if you’re not occasionally ticking bottom, you’re not deep enough.
