The Mercury Midge in Gray is a subtle but deadly midge larva imitation, ideal for technical trout in the clear, cold waters of the Eastern Sierra. Designed with a slender, segmented body and topped with a signature silver “mercury” bead, this fly mimics gas-bubble-emerging midges—a frequent and critical food source in Sierra stillwaters and spring creeks.
Its gray coloration offers a realistic silhouette in clear water, particularly under high sun and during slow midge activity windows when trout are selective. The bead not only adds a natural flash but also helps the fly sink quickly into the feeding zone, making it perfect for suspending under an indicator or presenting on a tight-line rig.
This pattern is exceptionally effective on lakes like Crowley, Bridgeport, and Big Virginia, as well as in slow runs of the Upper Owens and East Walker, where midges are a year-round staple.
