The Black Copper John is a heavyweight workhorse for fast-moving freestone streams and pocket water throughout the Eastern Sierra, from the Upper Owens and Hot Creek to Rock Creek and the East Walker River. Designed with a slim, dense profile and bead head, this pattern sinks quickly, getting into the strike zone fast—ideal for deep runs and riffles where trout hold tight to the bottom.

The black wire body offers a natural yet slightly suggestive appearance, mimicking a range of aquatic nymphs, from dark mayflies to stonefly nymphs. Its flashback wing case and tightly segmented profile give it an added trigger element, making it effective in both clear and lightly stained water conditions.

Often used as the anchor fly in a two-fly Euro or indicator nymph rig, the Black Copper John is a dependable pattern when trout are holding deep and feeding cautiously.
